Richard Horace Browne papers, 1852-1873.

The collection includes letters from Lieutenant Robert Horace Browne containing vivid descriptions of military life in various locations, including near Tupelo, Miss., and Confederate camps in Alabama; of troop movements; and of politics within the army. Most letters are addressed to Browne's wife Sarah, who moved from New Orleans to Chattanooga, Tenn., and from Chattanooga to Lowndes County, Miss., in order to avoid the war. The collection also includes a small amount of other family correspondence.

Richard Horace Browne was born in Southampton County, Va., in 1830. He graduated from Jefferson College (later Washington and Jefferson College) in 1851. In 1853, he moved to New Orleans, La., to attend the University of Louisiana Law School. After graduating, he remained in New Orleans and practiced law, primarily in United States courts.
